Moms Making Money

Kim Kardashian is now an expert on teen pregnancy, having briefly paid attention to something other than women’s foundation color and which toilet she’s supposed to attend the opening of this week. Kim posted a preachy missive on her blog about the case of 90 teen pregnancies in a high school in Memphis, Tennessee, which she claims to have learned about from a segment of The Today Show that aired on the same day she appeared on the show with her sister.

Kim blamed MTV’s Teen Mom for the spate of pregnancies in Memphis, which is strange considering that the teen pregnancy rate has been on the decline since Teen Mom started airing. If Kim had paid attention to the Today Show segment, she may have realized that all the pregnant teens at that one high school may have more to do with the fact that at least 3 dozen of them transfered to the school to get special services they offered to pregnant students. Today also mentioned in that segment that the birthrate for US teens is down 6% this year. There are still too many pregnant teens of course, and Kim blames MTV for it.

In response, Teen Mom’s notorious baby-daddy basher, Amber Portwood, pointed out that the teen pregnancy rate has declined. She also mentioned that Kim got famous for a sex tape and isn’t one to talk. I can’t stand Amber but she gets props for this:

After seeing a “sad and disturbing” report on Today about a high school in Memphis, Tenn., that counted 90 students who were pregnant or had given birth in the past year, the E! star took to her blog and Twitter Wednesday to tell her fans that getting pregnant at a young age is not something to aspire to.

“It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls,” she wrote on Celebuzz. “The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!”

So, what do Teen Mom’s Amber Portwood and Teen Mom 2’s Jenelle Evans have to say about that?

“There’s actually a study that shows since the original 16 and Pregnant aired, the number of teen pregnancies have gone down,” Portwood exclusively tells E! News.

“Last time I checked, Kim Kardashian had a sex tape floating around on the internet and I’m pretty sure she made a lot of money off of it,” says the mother of 2-year-old Leah. “She made a sex tape when she was younger and she wants to bash the girls on Teen Mom? If you read the articles about the show, they do nothing but talk about how the show reveals how hard it is for all of us. It doesn’t glamorize anything! It shows the heartache we’ve all gone through.

“We may be ‘celebrities’ because our face is out there, but it’s only because we’ve done some bad things. That’s not glamorous.”

Well, the paycheck is a little glamorous…

“When I think back to when I was 16, there is no way I would even have considered having a baby,” Kim continued in her blog. “That thought wouldn’t even have entered my head. Having a baby is one one of the biggest, and most life-changing decisions a person can make and while I’m not saying that no teen is in the position to raise a child, having a baby so young shouldn’t be seen as the trendy thing to do.”

[From E! News]

E! also asked the new bad mom on the block Janelle about this controversy, and she said simply “sh*t happens.”

See, Kim was once a teenager and she didn’t get pregnant so she should serve as a role model, not these Teen Moms who are stealing her reality show thunder. They don’t rate magazine covers, she does!

I agree with Amber that Teen Mom doesn’t glamorize what these girls go through. The money and tabloid covers they get glamorize it, though. It’s not that I agree with Kim Kardashian at all. She’s such a dimwit she missed the whole part of the story where they said that the teen pregnancy rate was down across the US. It’s just that these anecdotal stories arouse Kim’s feelings of frozen-faced superiority, and that’s so much more compelling than statistics or facts.

Life is anything but a beach for "Real Housewives of Atlanta" stars Nene and Greg Leakes.  Greg's 34-year-old son, Damian Leakes, is now spilling the beans about his stepmama and Greg.  And it ain't pretty.

Read on for the divorce details Nene doesn't want you to know...

Who needs enemies when you've got family like this?  Greg's son, Damian, and Nene's step-son, has been threatening to air out his parents' dirty laundry for a while now.

Damian recently told Radar that Greg and Nene are on the verge of making their divorce happen, despite Nene telling press and media that reports of their split are untrue.  She claims they are just going through a rough patch but she has not moved on to another man and they are very much still together, even though we can't remember the last time we saw her wearing her wedding ring.

But it gets worse.  Damian says once Greg married Nene after meeting her at the gentlemen's club, he kicked all his kids out of the house!

"Once he met her he kicked us out of the house," Damian said, "the young siblings went to my mom's, and he just ran off to start a whole new life literally in front of our faces."

The kids have never been acknowledged on the show.  And now, Greg is demanding Nene to pay him back a whopping $300,000 he allegedly spent to make her a star-uh.  Not sure if that includes all the body sculpting she recently got done.

Damian says, "Nothing has been filed, but lawyers have been retained," Damian said.

"Gregg is also trying to get $300,000 back, but NeNe doesn't want to give him anything.

"She (NeNe) wants to keep the house and move on with her life. They're trying to portray it as 'we're not getting divorced' and they're trying to work it out right now, but that's not the case."

Damian said, "She wants to keep the house and move on with her life. They're trying to portray it as 'we're not getting divorced' and they're trying to work it out right now, but that's not the case."

And about where all the couple's so-called money came from:

"That's pretty much what the kids are trying to figure out because we never knew that that kind of money was available or within reach to put into that kind of project," Damian said.

"At the time when the show started was when we all started really bumping heads with NeNe and Greg.

Damian claimed the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on NeNe was used to portray "a lifestyle."

"You have to keep up with the Joneses, so to speak," Damian said.

On where all that money went:

"He [Gregg] feels like he put her where she is... he feels that she wouldn't be anywhere if he didn't give her the money to put her where she needs to be.

"He feels like he made her because he gave her a lifestyle everyone wanted to see. She feels like he should have supported her and had her back. NeNe does have a selfish quality and so does Gregg and eventually over time they're going to butt heads like what they're doing now.

"They're both stubborn. No one wants to give up anything. Everyone wants to say it's you're fault.

"My dad has always wanted to -- even if he didn't have it -- live the good life. And when they got together it was a monster being created. And this is what happens when the monster grows three heads.

We haven't verified this is his actual Twitter account yet, but it's looking like it is.  Here's what he said back in August when he was trying to sell this story to our homies over at Allhiphop:

@allhiphopcom got sum REAL dirt on my stepmom nene leakes. On my dad greg too. Tried 2 spare em but fuck it

This greg son. Tired of da leakes name being dogged out. We bout to expose greg AND nene. Stay tuned

8:12 PM Aug 24th, 2010 via mobile web .There are ALOT of secrets! This is Greg leakes son. The REAL leakes family is tired of the b.s.! Time to expose the TRUTH!

Wow.  Let the Splitsville drama continue...

• Amar'e Stoudemire's dreams just came true: He recently posed for Vogue’s April issue! [Page Six/NYP]

• Joseph Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa: "[Calvin] is just great. He's a genius. He has a legacy of work, a huge body of work. You cannot compare really because he is just unique. And it's not fair because he has 35 years to back him up. It's very tempting and an easy thing to just bring back the archives. That challenges me. I find that most difficult. I find it insulting to the house and insulting to myself. For me to take it forward — that is Calvin — to look forward. So for me to look back and just copy something, then I am not doing my job." [Vogue UK]

• Garance Doré recently moved into a prewar Greenwich Village loft with boyfriend Scott “The Sartorialist” Schuman, explaining, “I don’t make sacrifices. There is no, ‘I leave everything for my man.’ I just do things when they make me feel good and they feel right." [NYT]

• Critical shopper Jon Caramanica on Soho’s new Fiorentini + Baker store: “From a distance, you could be forgiven for thinking they were sets of twins, or maybe the whole Duggar clan, 19 siblings and counting. There is not much variation to be had on the women’s side. Colors: black, or maybe a muted earth tone. (There was one chalky lavender option; it looked lonely.)” [NYT]

According to a BusinessInsider interview, Gogo in-flight wireless is doing well and just raised another $35 million in capital to keep the lights on and the in-flight Wi-Fi flowing. Aircell, Gogo’s parent company, says that the service served 3 million sessions between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Google offered free Gogo on all flights during this period.

In-flight Internet is, in a word, great. However, I worry that it is severely hampering my movie watching time these days as I’m encouraged to write and work during flights as opposed to read magazines and watch movie’s I wouldn’t normally watch with the lady wife like The Box and Pootie Tang. Gogo is available on American, United, Delta, Virgin America, and Air Canada and airlines love it, as Dan Frommer points out, “because it’s a way to distract passengers and generate revenue at the same time — unlike installing TV sets and on-demand movies, which costs money.”

Making money with your digital camera isn't the easiest thing to do. Everybody wants to go pro these days, but most don't have what it takes. Just having a new digital camera and an idea about framing isn't going to be enough. You need to be cut from a certain kind of cloth.

The question is this: are you cut out for it?

Even though being a professional photographer is hard, it isn't impossible. Besides, anything worth having is worth busting your hump for.

But you don't want to chase your dream like an idiot, wasting time on things that don't bring you closer to your goal. You want to stick to principles that have worked for others in the past that wanted what you want now.

But outlining all of those principles would take more than one article. So consider this a primer, something to get you walking down the right road. Really, it's more of a brain dump: applicable ideas you can use to go from amateur with a camera to pro making money from their craft:

1. Taking pictures should be as natural to you as blinking. Start taking pictures all of the time. This is how you capture those truly unique and valuable moments.

2. Learn to feel out the situations around you. You need to be where the action is. Getting your timing down as a photographer takes time, but it's what separates the killers from the wannabes. Get a feel for being in the right place at the right time, with your camera ready and pointed.

3. To play in this game, you have to stay sharp. Not a single day should go by when you aren't taking shots and improving your craft. The minute you take a break is the minute the guy next to you takes your plate. You better be hungrier than that guy if you want to make photography into a career.

4. Use forums online and live events to network and start building relationships. Just like any other venture in life, it's all about who you know. The more folks that know you and what your work is all about, the better chance of landing paying gigs.

5. There are websites that will pay you to submit quality photographs for their clients to buy. Some that come to mind include iStock and Associated Content. While the pay isn't extraordinary, it's a start. And everything needs a start.

6. Alternatively, you can leverage the exposure that free websites bring to your photos. Places like Flickr and Photobucket are great for this since they have built in communities. More than one photographer has built up a strong enough following on these kinds of sites to lead to other, more lucrative opportunities.

Bottom line is this: If you have a genuine passion for photography, there is money to be made. Thousands of others no more talented than you have broken the chains of a 9 to 5 to live their dreams. Maybe it's your turn. But it won't be given to you... you have to take it.

Making Money With Website

Kołcz is an info-science heavy, having published numerous research articles in publications like The Journal of Supercomputing, Neurocomputing and Neural Networks. He appears to have a special affinity for spam crushing, something Twitter must struggle with a whole lot. As use of the service grows, so too will the importance of its search - especially given the very public nature of Twitter's data.

Bing powers search not just at Microsoft, but at Yahoo as well. Combined, that means that the search technology Kołcz has been the lead scientist behind has performed 12% of all searches in the United States. There is only one Principal Scientist at Bing, but it appears he's now gone to Twitter.

Update: There appears to be some question about just how unique Kołcz is as Principal Scientist at Bing. Microsoft is a giant pile of people with impressive titles, but no one else describes themselves as a Principal Scientist on Bing in their LinkedIn profiles at least. Jan Pedersen, however, does describe himself as the Chief Scientist of Core Search at Microsoft. I'll do some more investigation to try to determine how central Kołcz has been on Bing.

There is huge, untapped potential latent in Twitter search. The company's database struggles have prevented meaningful archive search, for example. That's a whole lot of history gone down the tubes.

Bing announced that it was including Twitter updates in its search results more than a year ago, in what was presumed to be one of Twitter's first big money-making deals.

Lest you tsk-tsk Microsoft too much for losing a big important data scientist, keep in mind that our last Microsoft HR story here had things going the other direction. See: Microsoft Hires World's Leading Geo-Dissident to Join Bing Maps Team

“There are more than 30 or 40 scanning companies and huge amount of books are scanned every day, so I can hardly believe all the scanning is legal,” Higuchi said in an interview in Tokyo last month.

Japanese will buy $80.5 million worth of e-books in the fiscal year ending March 31, most of it comics for mobile phones, Ueno said.

Page upon page of black and white etchings of wide-eyed, young people of indeterminate age drawn in that larger than life Japanese cartoon style, engaged in every kind of sexual act, legal or otherwise.

“Normal sex doesn’t sell well,” Komiya remarks.

“School sex, tied-up sex, abnormal sex, sells. So this is what they draw.

“Mangaka don’t draw this stuff because they want to expose children to sexual perversity, they draw it for one reason: to make money.”

JapanWatch3: When foreigners go to Japan to make comics.

German Dirk Schwieger is another artist who came up with an original approach to comic-making. While he spent only one year in Japan, in 2006, he grabbed a lot of attention when he turned his 24-part “webcomic” into an interactive project.

In his blog he chronicled a year’s worth of “assignments” he undertook at the request of readers while living in Tokyo. People from around the world would send him tasks to accomplish — anything from “meeting a traditional sword maker” to “looking for a bosozoku biker gang” — and he would write, illustrate and post a new comic each week based on his experience.

ThisIsGreatWatch: Zach Weiner, web cartoonist had an image used, out of context, to justify ant-gay marriage sentiment by an anti-gay marriage sentiment website. But it’s a hotlinked image. So he changed it from this (left) to this (right).

I’ve been going through my stash of Marvel memos to pick out ones that might be useful to Sean Howe (who definitely needs a Marvel nickname), who’s writing a history of Marvel in the ’70s, and while doing this I came across one of my many suggestions to Stan. I had the bizarre idea that we could start a Dial-a-Superhero service than would allow fans to hear pre-recorded messages from Marvel’s greatest.  Check out my note to Stan below

A Not-Brief Reaction To A Video That’s Already Been Taken Down

History tells us that the big comics companies have acted as bad industry partners since their inception. We’re even now coming out of a period where a series of furtive, overlapping agreements between certain industry players and Diamond threw up structural barriers that kept smaller publishers from opportunities they might have used to make a bigger plash in comics’ primary market, a web of arrangement that helped seal into amber a status quo that placed greater value on short-term profits from fees and privileged hierarchies and goosing certain titles than onto long-term profit from partnership and information-sharing and allowing for title development. Comics blew some major opportunities there.

And when it comes to ex-employees, you’ve got to understand that they’re ex-employees: they’re people who have just lost their jobs. And it’s very unfortunate, but unfortunately you’ve got to take what they say with a grain of salt. You’ve got to understand where it’s coming from. It doesn’t diminish their contribution to what we’ve done, it doesn’t mean that I didn’t appreciate their hard work – but when you look at the landscape of comic books today, a lot of these people wouldn’t even be working in this business if it wasn’t for Wizard giving them their first start.

JapanWatch: The Japanese are ridding shelves of comics for ebook scans… and companies who will scan your books for you.

JapanWatch2: How the Tokyo Comics Code works in practice;

Private Label Rights (PLR) became popular the last couple of years. There are countless websites that you are able to get private label articles, software or e-books. In theory, you are able to make money by reselling these products. Another way is to use the info to create a website with the content and make money with Google Adsense and or affiliate programs. Audio products can be made from the Private Label Rights. Also, some people will combine two or more Private Label Rights products to make a totally new item. Some others will use the private label products to create newsletters or any combination of the above.

With Private Label Rights, you are able to claim the information as your own. You can list yourself as the author or change the material. For the most part, you can do just about anything, but it will be listed with the product. You can find some Private Label Rights products on eBay. Here is a list of a few websites that you can get Private Label Reports.

http://www.articleunderground.com

http://www.wow-content-club.com

http://www.privatelabelpublishing.com

Membership prices are all over the board and most of these sites limit memberships. The content can be in many different categories. Here are just a few of the most popular, Internet Marketing, Travel, Health & Fitness, Self Improvement, Pets and Online Dating.

Even with limited memberships, it is hard to sell the product as is. However, most people that is exactly what they attempt to do online. The prices on these products are greatly reduced by following this method. Following that strategy, it will be hard to make money online unless you have a lot of website visitors or a large mailing list. Here are some tips to help with selling Private Label Right Products.

At the very least, you need to change the title and the cover. That will make your product unique from 90% or more of your competition. Changing the sales letter would be a plus also.

Additionally, you should go through the material and adjust it to your perspective. Adding to the material or rewriting certain sections will make it different. Combining two or three materials together would make it a unique creation. Doing some research on the internet or local library will help in creating a better product.

Other possibilities are to create an audio e-book with the Private Label Right material. One more possibility is to self publish a book by combing material as mentioned above and adding your perspective. Here is a site that you can easily and quickly self publish your material.

http://www.lulu.com

The hardest niche category to be successful is Internet Marketing. The best niche is to pick something you have an interest.

If you want to make money with private Label Rights, you need to create an unique product. Selling the product with out changes is a hard way to make money online.

Secrets to Making Money

Deadline confirms the deal with Universal but isn’t able to say whether Julian Assange will participate in the film. Regardless, the movie could be a firebrand that surpasses the interest generated by Mr. Gibney’s last few films.

Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblower organization WikiLeaks and therefore responsible for the release of thousands of confidential government documents, is a figure that people tend to either love or hate. To some he’s a hero and a champion of free speech and democracy; others see him as an enemy and someone who endangers our freedom by compromising the inner workings of government. (And there are probably many who see him as a troublesome, egocentric kid.)

All that being the case I’d say that Alex Gibney is the perfect man for this job, and I’m eagerly awaiting the results of his work.

In addition, producers at Josephson Entertainment and Michelle Krumm Prods have optioned Andrew Fowler‘s forthoming biography of Mr. Assange, called The Most Dangerous Man in the World. They plan a ‘suspenceful drama thriller’ based on the bio. The book follows the WikiLeaks founder from childhood to the present day. Producers compare the story they want to tell to All the President’s Men.

No word on a screenwriter, director or cast for the biopic at this point. Too bad Steven Soderbergh likely won’t have any interest in this; he’d be great for it. [Variety]
